First Baptist Church (Abilene, Tex.)
The First Baptist Church of Abilene, Texas was organized on Dec. 17, 1881, by Rev. T. R. Leggett, pastor at Buffalo Gap, Texas. It originally met in the Schoolhouse, but in 1883 it erected its own church building, with Rev. Bennett Hatcher as pastor. Dr. O. C. Pope of the Baptist Home Mission Board of New York City aided in the organization.
