Sidney C. Peterman was born in Portsmouth, N.H. in 1920. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. in January 1943 and began his military career as mortar platoon leader in Company H of the 87th Mountain Infantry Division at Camp Hale, Colo. in May 1943. Peterman was later assigned to command Company F of the 87th Infantry Division. He served at Camp Hale (Colorado), Fort Ord (California), Kiska (Aleutian Islands), Camp Swift (Texas), Camp Carson (Colorado) and in Italy. Peterman was wounded in action on April 21, 1945 near the Po River and received the Silver Star medal for gallantry and the Bronze Star medal for leadership.
