South Carolina family. Rufus Kilpatrick Porter, son of Rev. Francis H. Porter (1786-1845), was born at Cedar Springs in Spartanburg District (S.C.) in 1827. He was educated at the South Carolina College and the Columbia Theological Seminary, and in 1852 he was licensed to preach by the Presbyterian Church. In 1853 he married Miss Jane Sophia Johnston of Winnsboro (S.C.), daugher of planter Samuel Johnston (1769-1853) and his third wife Elizabeth Crawford. In the 1850s, Rev. R. K. Porter pastored churches in Georgia, and in January 1867, he was called to the pastorate of the Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta (Ga.), where he ministered until his death in July 1869. During the Civil War Rev. Porter was the chaplain of Cobb's Legion.
