Liss was born on May 15, 1914 and enlisted in the Army at Jamaica, N.Y. on March 26, 1941. At the time of enlistment he was single, had completed four years of high school and working as a salesman. Liss joined the 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash. where he was assigned to Company C, later with Company G of the 87th Infantry Regiment. He also served at Camp Hale, Colo.; Fort Ord, Calif.; Kiska Island, Alaska; Camp Carson, Colo.; and at Camp Swift, Tex. Liss was not deployed with the 10th Mountain Division to Italy. He died in Smithtown, N.Y. in 2008. Russel Liss may have also been known as Axel Maurice Liss.
