The SIO Deputy Director is responsible for all non-academic operations of SIO including budget, capital planning, space, research diving, communications, development and technical publications, but excluding ship operations. Tom Collins joined SIO on June 7, 1983 as Assistant Director for Administration and Finance, and he became Deputy Director, Administrative Affairs and Associate Vice Chancellor Marine Sciences in 1993.
Before 1995, deputy directors filed their files into the Director's Office files. From 1983-1994, Collins filed personnel and committee files in the Director's Office files. Beginning in 1995, he retained all his records together in this collection.
