Created by American Association of University Professors-FSU Chapter

Hide Profile

While it cannot be determined from these records when the AAUP-FSU chapter was created, its Constitution and By-laws for January 1952 states that "the FSU Chapter shall have as its object cooperation with the Association in advance of the standards and ideals of teaching and research in this situation." The chapter was governed by an executive council consisting of the president, vice-president, secretary-treasurer, the ex-presidents for a period of two years following the expirations of their terms of office, and, after their appointment, the chairmen of the standing committees. FSU Meterology Professor Dr. Werner Baum (1952) and Geography Professor David Christensen (1957) were two early Chapter presidents. From the early 1950s through the 1960s, chapter committees included a nominations committee, program committee, membership committee, salary committee, publications committee, and a committee on professional relations and standards. Chapter activities included conducting special studies on topics such as salaries; sponsoring informational programs; providing a forum for broad discussions of many topics; and providing faculty members with the opportunity to work together on common problems and to present their conclusions or questions to the administration or any other appropriate agency. According to Ralph Dougherty, former President of the United Faculty of Florida-FSU Chapter, the local AAUP chapter in the late 20th Century attempted to recertify itself as FSU's chief collective bargaining unit, but that effort failed because of opposition from the United Faculty of Florida.
