Fagan, George V., 1917-

George V. Fagan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1917, and entered Temple University, Philadelphia in 1936 from which he received both his Bachelor of Science degree (1940) and his Master of Arts degree in history (1941). He taught at Temple for a year before beginning his military service in 1941. After World War II, Fagan returned to Temple University in 1946 and taught there for five years when he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He was assigned to teach history at the U. S. Naval Academy from 1951-1954 and the following year he was at Air University Press as the Associate Editor. Colonel Fagan was then assigned as one of the original members of the faculty of the United States Air Force Academy in 1955. He served as Associate Professor of History and Chairman of the American History course for one year before being appointed the Director of the Academy Library. Under his direction, the Academy Library grew from 20,000 to 265,000 volumes while Fagan was also overseeing the direction of the other libraries on the Academy grounds. During this time, Colonel Fagan was additionally a lecturer in History at Regis College, University of Colorado and the University of Denver for many years. Colonel Fagan retired in 1969 but continued to remain active in Academy activities. An accomplished author, Fagan completed several books after retirement including "The Air Force Academy: An Illustrated History" in 1988 and "Air Force Academy Heritage: The Early Years" in 2006.
