Lowell Technological Institute. Weaving and Knitting Dept.
The Lowell Textile School in Lowell, Mass., was founded in 1895 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a semiprivate textile school. Its primary function was to provide skilled and educated labor for the textile industry. In 1928 its name was changed to the Lowell Textile Institute and in 1953 it became the Lowell Technological Institute. In 1975 LTI merged with Lowell State College to become the University of Lowell, and in 1991 the University of Lowell became the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UMass Lowell).
