James H. Monteath left New York about 1880 and traveled by steamboat up the Missouri River to Fort Benton, and then by stagecoach to Deer Lodge. He stayed there briefly, and then moved to Butte. He worked as bookkeeper for the Intermountain Publishing Company, from 1885 until 18--. He served as a Representative in the Legislature during the 1889 to 1905 sessions. He enlisted for the Spanish American War in April 1898, and served until September of that year as a major with Grigsby's Rough Riders. In 1900 he was appointed Indian Agent for the Blackfeet tribe and served until 1905.

About 1906 he moved to Tonopah, Nevada, where he began investing in mining properties, in partnership with Malcolm L. MacDonald, also of Butte. After MacDonald's death in 1911, Monteath continued to work in Tonopah for another two years as secretary of the Yerington Mountain Copper Company, and then returned to Montana. He was a partner with Tom Dawson in the Glacier Park Trading Company and the Tom Dawson Transportation Company, during 1913 and 1914. He continued to live in East Glacier until a year before his death.

James H. Monteath died on October 18, 1936, at the Montana Soldiers' Home.
