Georgia Export and Import Company.
The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The Georgia Export and Import Company was incorporated in Chatham County, Georgia in 1896. According to incorporation records, the Company was chartered to "carry on the business of shipping agents and ship brokers, and a general commercial, commission, and shipping business" in Savannah, Georgia. The principal stockholder of the company was the Ocean Steamship Company of Savannah.
(Cont.) The Georgia Export and Import Company was chartered for 20 years. In 1916, the Board of Directors voted to take no steps to renew the charter, and the company was dissolved.
