Getúlio Dornelles Vargas nasceu em São Borja (RS), no dia 19 de abril de 1882, filho do casal Manuel do Nascimento Vargas e Cândida Dornelles Vargas.

Diplomou-se bacharel pela Faculdade de Direito de Porto Alegre em 1907. Elegeu-se Deputado Estadual pelo Partido Republicano Rio-Grandense durante os períodos 1909/1912 e 1917/1921. Foi eleito Deputado Federal pelo mesmo partido, assumindo a liderança de sua bancada. No governo Washington Luís, assumiu a função de Ministro da Fazenda entre 1926 e 1927. Em seguida, elegeu-se Presidente do Rio Grande do Sul pelo período 1928/1930. Em 1930 candidatou-se à Presidência da República pela Aliança Liberal e, não sendo eleito, tomou o poder através da Revolução de 30, assumindo a chefia do Governo Provisório de 1930 a 1934. Um de seus primeiros atos no governo foi a revogação de Constituição de 1891. Entre outras instituições, criou, neste período, o Ministério da Educação e Saúde, responsável pela reforma do ensino secundário e superior, e o Ministério do Trabalho, que deu nova orientação à Justiça Trabalhista. Demitiu os Governadores, nomeando Interventores para os estados (com exceção de Minas Gerais). Pressionado pela Revolução Constitucionalista de 1932, Vargas convocou uma Assembléia Constituinte em 1933, que promulgou a nova Constituição em 1934. Em 16 de julho deste ano, Vargas foi eleito pelos deputados constituintes Presidente da República. Em 10 de novembro de 1937, Getúlio Vargas deu um golpe de estado, instaurando a ditadura do Estado Novo que o manteve no poder até 1945. Em 1937, ele dissolveu todos os partidos políticos e criou o Departamento de Imprensa e Propaganda (DIP) e o Departamento Administrativo do Serviço Público (DASP). Durante o Estado Novo, foram fundadas a Usina Siderúrgica Nacional, a Companhia Vale do Rio Doce e o Conselho Nacional de Petróleo.

Com volta da democracia em 1945, Getúlio atuou em dois partidos: o PTB (Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro) e o PSD (Partido Social Democrata), sendo eleito Senador na Assembléia Nacional Constituinte de 1946 na legenda do PSD (RS). Em 1950, foi eleito novamente Presidente da República (PTB), desta vez pela via democrática. Contudo, seu governo enfrentou forte oposição. Esta endureceu em 1954, apoiada em uma série de denúncias de corrupção. A situação piorou com a tentativa de assassinato do político e jornalista Carlos Lacerda – forte opositor de Vargas –, na qual veio a falecer o Major Rubens Vaz, que o acompanhava. O crime teria sido encomendado por Gregório Fortunato, chefe da guarda pessoal do presidente. Pressionado entre a renúncia ou a deposição, Getúlio Vargas acabou se suicidando, em seu quarto, no Palácio do Catete, no Rio de Janeiro, em 24 de agosto de 1954.

Casou-se com Darcy Lima Sarmanho em 1911, e desse casamento nasceram os filhos Lutero, Jandira, Alzira, Manuel Antônio e Getúlio.
