Music professor. Marion P. Barnum (1926-1988) received her Diploma (1949) and Post-Graduate Diploma (1951) from Julliard School in New York City. She then attended the University of Iowa where she received her M.F.A. (1966) and Ph. D. (1971) in Music Arts. Prior to her appointment at Iowa State University, she taught at Knoxville College in Tennessee and the University of Missouri-Columbia. In 1972 she became an Assistant Professor in Music at Iowa State, and was promoted to Associate in 1972 and Professor in 1982.

Barnum's research concentrated on the performance and study of the music of Johann Nepomuk Hummel, a student of Mozart. She was the first person to present a recital of all six of Hummel's sonatas. Dr. Barnum was also active in the Iowa Music Teacher's Association, the Ames International Festival Association, and the Town and Gown Association.
