Whitton, Beaumert, 1910-1990.
Beaumert Whitton was born in Ridgeway, Pa., in 1910 to Agnes Winchester and Earle Whitton. His family moved to North Carolina in 1916 and he grew up in Charlotte. Whitton attended Charlotte public schools and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1928 to 1930. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1933 with a degree in construction engineering. He joined his father, Earle Whitton, as a field engineer in the family construction business -- Southeastern Construction Company -- after his graduation from MIT. He became president of the firm in 1959.
He served as a member and as chair of the Charlotte Planning Board between 1945 and 1950 and helped establish a master plan, draft the city's original zoning law, and create Independence Boulevard. Whitton was a member of the Charlotte Rotary Club, Charlotte Country Club, and Charlotte City Club. As an active member of the Democratic Party, he served as a Precinct Committee member. His philanthropic activities included financing trips abroad for African-American students, as well as actively recruiting blacks for the engineering program at MIT.
He married Daphne Amelia Clark of Clarkton, N.C., on July 10, 1937 and they had three children: Margaret (b. 1942), Robert (b. 1944), and Mary, (b. 1945). The Whittons attended Myers Park Presbyterian Church, where Beaumert served as a deacon and an elder. He died in Charlotte on April 24, 1990.
