Author, poet, and composer of Charleston, S.C., and descendant of the Palmer familiy of Beaufort District, S.C.; Mary Stanley Bunce Palmer Dana wrote this letter years before her 1848 marriage to Episcopal minister Robert Doyne Shindler (1814-1874), under whose name she is known today; she published historical fiction, poetry, a book on spiritualism, and several volumes of songs and musical arrangements for voice, piano, harp, and guitar, set to popular tunes, traditional Scottish and Irish tunes, and operatic airs.
