John Lawson Gregg was born April 13, 1905 in Spokane, WA to Ethel Batchelor Gregg and Alexander H. Gregg. The family moved to Las Cruces, NM in 1911. Ethel Gregg taught elementary school in Las Cruces. Gregg graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1923, where he played on the football team. In 1932, he started work for the Elephant Butte Irrigation District (EBID) as an assessor and collector. He worked for the company for 37 years, 24 of those as a manager. He was a member of the New Mexico Farm Livestock Bureau and in 1981 he was appointed to the Interstate Stream Commission by Governor Bruce King.
