Variant namesEnlisted 1917. As Captain stationed at Camp Custer and Camp Sherman, Ohio (1922-25) and later the U. of Pennsylvania. During World War II was instructor at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. and assigned to staff of General George C. Marshall as Lt. Colonel. As Major General was president of a military commission convened to prosecute Tomoyuki Yamashita. Continued to compile the OFFICER'S GUIDE and other military handbooks through the 1960's.

Russel Burton Reynolds (b. Dec. 24, 1894-d. Dec. 8, 1970) was born in Dundee, Michigan, the son of Sydney Howard and Nellie (Johnson) Reynolds. He was a student at the University of Wisconsin, 1913-15; a graduate of the United States Army Infantry School, 1922 and a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff School, 1938. He married Florine Janney on January 12, 1918, and they had one son, Russel Burton Reynolds, Jr. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Army in 1917 and advanced through the grades to Major General (temporary) in 1944. During his career he served as Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics, University of Pennsylvania from 1925 to 1929, Ripon College from 1936 to 1937, instructor at the United States Army Infantry School from 1929 to 1933, and at the United States Army Medical Field Service School from 1938 to 1941. He served in the Army General Staff Corps from 1942 to November 1944. He commanded the Sixth Service Command at Chicago, Illinois from November 1, 1944 to June 7, 1945. He served on the staff of the U. S. Army Forces, Western Pacific from June 7, 1945 to March 20, 1946, then as Chief of Special Services in the Department of the Army from 1946 to 1949.
