Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry
The Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry was founded in 1891 and first began enrolling students in 1892. Under its first president, James MacAlister, the earliest academic departments included art (including a School of Illustration run by noted illustrator Howard Pyle), business, domestic economy, a library school, mechanic arts, teacher training, the scientific department, the technical department, and lectures/evening classes. The second president of Drexel, Hollis Godfrey, consolidated these departments into four schools: engineering, domestic science and arts, the secretarial school, and the evening school.
