Farmer, livestock breeder, businessman, politician and philanthropist from Granville, Ill.

After studying at Oberlin College and Hillsdale College, Hopkins joined his father, Joel Willis Hopkins (1814-1902), in managing the family's extensive interests in farming, livestock, land speculation and banking. He travelled widely for business and pleasure, and wrote in detail about what he had seen and done in his diary. He served in the Illinois House of Representatives (1891-1894, 1899-1900), and was active in promoting the commercial and cultural development of Granville, Ill.
