Bradley was an English literary scholar noted for his criticism on Shakespeare. Snell graduated from Oberlin College (1893), studied at Oxford University (1904-1905), received her master's degree from the University of Good Hope (1908) and her doctorate from Yale University (1914). She was for many years a professor of English literature at Huguenot College in Wellington, South Africa.
