Referred to by herself and by others as Katherine Loder. She was a graduate of Dickinson College and a Ph. D student in the Romance Languages Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Loder wrote her dissertation on the 19th-century French author and journalist Léon Gozlan. She travelled to France in 1939 to gather literary and biographical information about her subject. Loder's dissertation was entitled The life and novels of Léon Gozlan: a representative of literary cross currents in the generation of Balzac (1943). She was awarded the American Legion Award of Merit for distinguished service in 1950.
