Willis Boughton moved, with his parents and siblings, from New York to settle in Sheffield, Bureau County, Illinois in 1862 where they started a dairy farm but because of the war they soon started raising food crops as well as hogs and sheep in an effort to help with the need for increased food supply. Willis eventually attended the University of Michigan received a Ph. D and went on to teach and to write poetry as well as history books.
