Helpman, Benjamin Francis, 1814-1874
Benjamin Francis (or Franklin) Helpman was born in Devon, England in 1814. He joined the navy in 1829 and left in 1840. He entered the government service, making many more voyages and leading a number of important expeditions. In 1854, he and his family settled at Warrnambool, Vic. where he became harbour master in 1861 and collector of customs in 1869. He died in 1874.
