Professor Austin has fought for gender and racial diversity since her undergraduate years at the University of Rochester. The product of a matriarchial family in a solid African-American community, she infuses law school lectures and research alike with cultural, economic, and sociological insights into complex legal arguments. At the University of Pennsylvania Law School she continues to lobby for an integrated faculty to reflect its student body. Outside academe she has served on the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Environmental Justice, Research, Education and Health Policy.
