Charles W. Johnson, Sr. (1922-1999) began his long association with Meharry Medical College in 1947. A native of Ennis, Texas, he received his undergraduate education at Prairie View University. He studied bacteriology and parasitology in a Masters program at the University of Southern California. After working a short time with the Rockefeller Institute, Johnson joined the faculty at Meharry. He earned his medical degree at Meharry in 1953 in addition to his duties teaching microbiology. He was chairman of the Department of Microbiology from 1959 to 1971. During the 1960s Dr. Johnson began taking an active part in administering Meharry's academic programs. In 1967 he was appointed dean of graduate studies and research. From then until his retirement in 1989 he was instrumental in the development of the Sickle Cell Program, the School of Graduate Studies, the Research in Biomedical Sciences Program, the Summer Biomedical Sciences Program for Undergraduates, and the Special Medical/Master of Medical Sciences Program. Dr. Johnson wrote of Meharry's history, his experiences there, and of his esteem and appreciation for the institution in The Spirit of a Place Called Meharry which was published shortly after his death.
