Hide Profile

Alice Wesley was born in Tuscola County (Mich.) near Caro on Nov. 19, 1903, the eldest of five children born to Lester J. and Mary K. Wesley. In 1923, Alice graduated with the first graduating class of Bay City Central High School. Afterwards, she attended Bay County Normal School and taught for four years, beginning in 1923, on her rural certificate. Alice then attended Michigan State Normal School in Ypsilanti (Mich.) for over a year. In 1929 she taught in Sparta (Mich.). Alice earned a life certificate (1928), and a B. A. from CMU (1935). After teaching in Sparta, Alice taught in the elementary grades in Bay City Public Schools (BCPS) until she married William F. Colby in Sept. 1938. They did not have any children. After William died in 1956, Alice returned to teaching in BCPS, where she taught until she retired in June 1967. Alice died on Oct. 11, 1996, eleven months after her sister Ruth M. M. Wesley, another teacher whose papers are also at the Clarke Historical Library. In 1998, the Alice J. Wesley Colby and William F. Colby Endowed Scholarship was established at CMU.
