Poet, author, reviewer, editor and academic, Brooks founded the Open Door Press, with Alan Gould and others, in the early 1970s. He was an Overseas Contributing Editor to New poetry and Poetry Australia while at the University of Toronto completing his MA and PhD. He was a Senior Tutor in the Department of English, University of Western Australia (1982-85), lecturer in the Department of English at the Australian National University (1986-91) and lecturer (1991-92) and Senior Lecturer (1992-) in Australian Literature, University of Sydney.
