Prominent Des Moines businessman and philanthropist. Grover C. Hubbell was the youngest child of Frederick Marion and Frances Cooper Hubbell. In 1905 he married Anna Ramsey Godfrey. The couple had 3 daughters. He served as a trustee for the F.M. Hubbell Estate from 1903 until 1956. He was involved with many small Des Moines area companies, especially in the coal, gravel and lumber industries. In 1924 Grover and his family moved into Terrace Hill following the death of his mother. He was responsible for major renovations to the mansion. Grover donated much of his time and money to various organizations in the Des Moines area, including Drake University, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, the YMCA and the YWCA, Community Chest, the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts and the Red Cross. Grover's three daughters (Frances Ingham, Helen Barshell and Mary Belle Windsor) were also involved in the Hubbell family businesses. Mary Belle's husband, James Harvey Windsor II, served as president of the Equitable Insurance Company of Iowa (1959-1969) and as trustee for the F.M. Hubbell Estate after the death of Grover.
