After World War II, Ford Motor Company in the United States and Ford Motor Company, Ltd. in the United Kingdom began the process of reclaiming lost properties and monies in countries occupied by or allied with the Axis powers during the war. The process of valuation, appraisal, and filing was complicated in the immediate post-war era by the nationalization of most industries by Eastern European countries, including Hungary and Romania, coming under the influence of the Soviet Union. Under the auspices of the War Claims Commission and the International Claims Commission (later the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission), Ford Motor Company worked to recover what they could until the mid-1960s. In addition, Ford Motor Company initiated claims against the West German government in an attempt to recover money for damages to the company's Cologne plant.
