Andrew Hunter was born in Edinburgh in 1743. He was educated privately in the city and then studied at Edinburgh University following the Arts and Divinity courses. He also studied Theology at the University of Utrecht. In 1767 Hunter was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Edinburgh and he was ordained as Minister of the New Church, Dumfries, in 1770. He became Minister of New Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh, in 1779, and then of the Tron Church in 1786. He was appointed to the Chair of Divinity at Edinburgh University in 1779. Hunter was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1792. Andrew Hunter, D.D., died on 21 April 1809.
