The Sutro Tunnel Company sold stocks to fund the construction of the Sutro Tunnel, which ran from Virginia City to Dayton, Nevada. The tunnel was designed to allow drainage away from mining operations in the Comstock Lode, and was first suggested by Adolph Sutro (1830-1898) in 1860. Construction began in 1869 and the main tunnel was completed in 1878, at which time Sutro sold his interests in the Sutro Tunnel Company and moved to San Francisco, where he later served as mayor.
