This regiment was organized in May 1862 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and soon after proceeded to Chattanooga, Tennessee. It operated in middle Tennessee some months, then joined the Army of Tennessee after its return from the Kentucky campaign. Its first major battle was at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as part of Hanson's Brigade. The regiment then remained at Tullahoma until it was ordered to Mississippi with the rest of Breckenridge's Division. It was part of the Confederate effort to lift the siege of Vicksburg, and that of Jackson. Having rejoined the Army of the Tennessee, the 41st fought at Chickamauga.
The regiment was then transferred to the brigade of Gen. Gracie of Mobile. It participated in battles near Chattanooga and Knoxville from September through November of 1863. There was a battle mentioned in the records called Bean's Station, which may be the same as the battle now referred to as Chester Station. The regiment reached Virginia in April, 1864 and was engaged in the battle of Drury's Bluff and Dutch Gap and was in the long siege of Petersburg. It was also involved in a smaller battle called Hatcher's Run, as well as in the fighting during the retreat to Appomattox.
