William E. McCarron was born in Lexington, Massachusetts (MA), received his B.A. in English (1964) from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and his M.A. in English (1965) from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA. Upon completion of Air Force ROTC, he entered active duty in 1967 as an instructor in the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Preparatory School. In June of that year, he was transferred to the Academy's Department of English where he taught until June of 1969. McCarron then went to Vietnam for a year and upon his return was assigned as a graduate student at the University of New Mexico for two years. He then returned to USAFA for four more years of teaching (completing his PhD in English in 1973), spent two years at Kirtland AFB, NM, and once again was back at USAFA in 1978 where he remained until his retirement in 1987, retiring as a tenure professor and Deputy Head of the USAFA English Department.
