Dr. Arnulf Ingar Muan was born on 19 April 1923 in Lokken Verk, Norway. He earned a diploma in chemistry at the Technical University of Norway and a Ph.D. in geochemistry at the Pennsylvania State University. He joined Penn State's faculty as assistant professor (1955), becoming professor of metallurgy in 1962. In 1966, he became head of the Department of Geochemistry and Mineralogy, renamed the Department of Geosciences in 1971, until 1974, when he returned to teaching and research in the field of heterogeneous equilibria at high temperatures. He served as associate dean for research of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (1976-1985) and as acting dean in 1985. He published extensively in technical and professional journals, and authored the book, Phase Equilibria among Oxides in Steelmaking. Dr. Muan died 17 December 1990.
