Organized 1794 by Middlesex County members of the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture as Western Society of Middlesex Husbandmen. Incorporated Feb. 28, 1803; first Board of Trustees chosen Oct. 22, 1804. Name changed to Society of Middlesex Husbandmen and Manufacturers Jan. 24, 1820, to Middlesex Agricultural Society in 1852. First meetings held in various locations in Middlesex County; activities centered at Concord from 1820. Society's first Cattle Show held at Concord, Oct. 11, 1820.

(Cont.) Premiums awarded at annual Cattle Show for best produce, livestock, etc. In 1853, Society's Committee to Purchase Land bought land in Concord on which sheds, pens, platform, fences, and other permanent structures were built for show. Membership lists show high proportion of Concord residents among members, including Simon Brown, Ephraim Bull, John M. Cheney, John Brooks Moore, Frederick G. Pratt, Minot Pratt, and Joseph Reynolds.
