Elbert Jay Benton (1871-1946) was an author, educator, and historian. He taught history at Adelbert College of Western Reserve University, becoming a full professor in 1909 and dean of the graduate school in 1925. He served as a trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society from 1913-1942, followed by employment as acting director and director. Benton wrote several books including Peace Without Victory and a three volume work entitled Cultural History of Cleveland.
