While serving as a missionary with his wife at the Freiberg Germany Temple, Kuehne became intrigued by the fact that the East German government allowed the Church to build a temple, the only one in a Communist country. After meeting Henry Burkhardt, who had served as mission president in the German Democratic Republic, he began to collect information about post-World War II East German Church history. His interest led him to write the book "Mormonen und Staatsburger: eine dokumentierte Geschichte der Kirche Jesu Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage in der DDR." He later published a biography of Henry Burkhardt titled "Henry Burkhardt: ein Leben fur die Kirche Jesu Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage in der DDR."
