Born in Brunswick, Maine, November 20, 1854; graduated from Drury College, Springfield, Missouri, 1878; Principal of Drury Academy, 1878-1891; studied at the University of Gottingen under noted German classical scholar Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorf, 1891-1892; Goodell Professor of Greek and Dean, Drury College, 1892-1901; appointed Collier Professor of Greek at Washington University, 1902; Acting Dean of the Washington University College of Liberal Arts, 1907-1908; Dean, College of Liberal Arts 1912-1913; Acting Chancellor of Washington University, 1913-1917; Chancellor, 1917-1923; died in St. Louis, March 24, 1925.
