Herbert F. Seawell, Sr. (1869-1949), an attorney of Carthage, N.C., served as solicitor for the 7th North Carolina Judicial District, member of the Moore County Board of Electors, United States District Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, member of the North Carolina Bar Association Executive Committee, and judge of the United States Board of Tax Appeals. A Populist in 1892 and Republican thereafter, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1916. Seawell and his wife Ella McNeill had three children: Ella Meade, Herbert, Jr. ("Chub"), and Henry ("Pen").
