William Malliol (the pseudonym of William T. McInenly) was a native of London, England. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950 and served in Korea, where he became a sergeant and received three Purple Hearts. He joined the French Foreign Legion in 1954 and served in the Algerian War. He was in the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1958, becoming a lieutenant.

In 1958 Malliol immigrated to the United States. He taught English at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Conn., from 1959 to 1961; he also worked as an advertising copywriter, salesman, and ship's captain before turning his attention solely to writing.
