Biographical Narrative

Harry Morton Butterfield was born on November 19, 1887 in Wilsonville, Nebraska, the son of William Tilton and Mary Louisa Butterfield. He received a B.S. in 1914 and an M.S. in 1916 from the University of California, Berkeley. He served as an Agricultural Extension Specialist at the University of California (1914-1955); Garden Editor, for the Oakland Tribune (1955-1960); and was President of the California Horticultural Society.

Butterfield conducted research on early California gardens and the history of the plants grown in the gardens. He recorded the story of those gardens and their memories in his manuscript, California Gardens of Memory. In 2003, Judith M. Taylor published Tangible memories: Californians and their gardens, 1800-1950, based on Butterfield's manuscript, California Gardens of Memory.
