The Office of Student Guidance and Counseling (known as of 1985 as the Guidance and Counseling Department) was a division of the Office of the Dean of Students, charged with responsibility for personal and vocational counseling services for students; with supervision of fraternities and sororities; and with administrative oversight of campus organizations and activities. Prior to the creation of the Dean of Students' Office in 1945, this latter responsibility was exercised by a faculty committee (before 1921) and by the Board of Supervision of Student Activities (1921-1939). The Office of Student Guidance and Counseling was also responsible for the planning and coordination of certain all-campus events including homecoming and commencement.
The Office maintained general files on each student organization, and also received and maintained reports required of student organizations, including the annual activity reports of non-residential student groups, and quarterly membership rosters of fraternities, sororities, and residence hall living units. These files and reports form the bulk of the present series.
