James Russell Douglas (September 29, 1912-May 6, 1980) was a graduate of Hemet High School and Chaffey Junior College. He received a B.S. in 1935 from the University of California, Davis and a Ph.D in 1939 from the University of California, Berkeley. Following two years in research at the George Williams Hooper Foundation, at the University of California at San Francisco, he served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from April 1942 to January 1946. His career at the University of California began with his appointment in January 1946, as Assistant Professor of Parasitology and Assistant Entomologist in the Agricultural Experiment Station. He was an investigator in the pathogenesis of parasitisms as well as the biology and control of internal and external parasites. A member of the founding faculty of the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, he chaired the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and its precursor group for more than a decade. From 1966 to 1972 he was Associate Dean and was Acting Dean in 1968-1969. He was a trustee of the Yolo-Sacramento County Mosquito Abatement District for several years. He served as an AID consultant at Taiwan National University in 1957 and was involved in the University of California--University of Chile convenio, spending a year in Chile and serving on the policy committee in subsequent years. He retired from the University in October 1973.
