Richardson family.

Hide Profile

The story of the Richardson family in America began with the immigration of Francis (I) and Rebecca Richardson; they settled in New York City in 1681. Together the couple had four children: Francis (II), John, and two daughters. Francis I died in 1688; his widow, Rebecca, subsequently married Edward Shippen (1639-1712), and they moved to Philadelphia. Francis II was the first in the family to become a silversmith. Two of his sons, Frank and Joseph, became silversmiths, as did two of Joseph's sons, Joseph, Jr., and Nathaniel. Joseph, Jr.'s son John became a book dealer, and John's son Joseph Gibbons was a physician.

Other families represented in these papers include Allen, Clark, Gibbons, Growden, Hoskins, Howell, Shippen, Taylor, Webb, and Cresson. Most of these families were related to the Richardsons through marriage. In addition, there are papers related to David Harper, Alexander Robertson, and Philip Hulbeart, for whom Joseph Richardson, Sr., served as executors of estates.
