The Society which grew out of the Women's Caucus of the American Sociological Association, was organized in 1971 to promote professional opportunities for women in sociology, provide job market services, explore the contributions of sociology to the humanization of sex roles, and serve as guardian for women in the ASA.

Sociologists for Women in Society grew out of a women's caucus, founded by Alice Rossi, within the American Sociological Association. Organized in 1971, SWS promotes professional opportunities for women in sociology, explores the contributions that sociologists can and should make in the investigation and humanization of current sex roles, serves as a watchdog to the ASA Council, runs a job market service, and published the SWS Newsletter (1971-April 1979), and SWS Network (July 1979-May 1986). In 1986 it began publishing SWS Network News, and in 1987, the journal Gender and Society.
