Carl Isaacs, Jr., his half brother Wayne Carl Coleman and George Elder Dungee were convicted and sentenced to die in 1974 by a Seminole County jury for the murders of farm patriarch Ned Alday, Ned's brother Aubrey, his sons Jerry, Chester and Jimmy Alday, and Jerry's wife, Mary. They were killed on May 14, 1973, in a bungled burglary. The suspects, who were escapees from a Maryland prison camp, were arrested in West Virginia less than a week later. Professor Wilkes is a nationally recognized authority in the fields of criminal procedure, capital punishment, and postconviction remedies. Professor Wilkes is one of the leading authorities in the world on the writ of habeas corpus, and in London, England has engaged in extensive research on the history of the writ at such research facilities as the British Library, the Public Record Office (now the National Archives), the University of London, the House of Lords Record Office (now the Parliamentary Archives), the Institute of Historical Research, and the Royal Historical Society. Recently, the Supreme Court of Georgia cited Professor Wilkes' article, The Writ of Habeas Corpus in Georgia, 12 Ga. B.J. 20 (Feb. 2007), in its opinion in Nguyen v. State, 282 Ga. 483 (2007).
