Lewis H. Smith was born in Massachusetts about 1835. He moved to Kossuth County, Iowa, about 1856. In 1865 he was a member of an expedition, led by Col. James A. Sawyers, to establish a wagon road between Niobrara, Nebraska, and Virginia City, Montana Territory. After the expedition he returned to Iowa and by 1885 became a bank cashier.
