Samuel Alexander Parnall was born in 1866 in Rockland, Michigan. He attended Michigan Mining School as part of its inaugural class, graduating in 1888 with a degree as a mine engineer. He was employed at various time as a mine engineer and mine superintendent for several companies in Michigan, Arizona, Colorado and Mexico. Parnall was president of the Michigan Mining School Alumni Association from 1892-1893.
