Carolyn Owens Hervey is a retired genealogist and local historian. She specialized in the African American family and slave genealogical research, having traced her own family back to the colonial and antebellum periods of American history. Hervey, who had previously worked part-time at the Arkansas History Commission, returned and worked from 1997 to 2007, before retiring from her position as Library Technical Assistant. She guided many African American genealogists through the complexities of African American genealogy during her time in the research room, and through her presentations at conferences and workshops. In 1998, Hervey was the recipient of the Susie Pryor Award for Arkansas women's history, for her paper, "Worthy of the Upper Rounds: Little Rock's Early Black Female School Teachers." She served on the board of the Arkansas Genealogical Society from 2001 to 2008 and assisted in the establishment of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Arkansas Chapter, founded in Little Rock, Ark., by Ronnie A. Nichols in 1997. Through the years, she has been featured in local and national media interviews.
