The collection represents four generations of the Dunham, Parker, Kellogg, and Dows families, from the 1850s to the 1950s. Edward Wood Dunham, a banker in New York City, married Maria Smyth Parker of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Carroll Dunham, a doctor and dean of faculty at the New York Homeopathic Medical College, married Harriet E. Kellogg. Their son, Edward Kellogg Dunham, was a noted pathologist who taught at Bellevue Medical College and, during World War I, researched and treated emphysema in U.S. Army hospitals. His wife, Mary (Dows) Dunham, and their daughter, Theodora (Dunham) Bodman, both worked for the American Fund for French Wounded during World War I. The family lived in New York City and Mount Desert Island, Maine during the early 20th century. Edward Kellogg Dunham Jr., a financier in New York City, was also involved in the development of Mount Desert Island. Various family members travelled in Europe, Egypt, the Caribbean, Panama, and the western U.S.
