Luther Clark Howell, son of Jeremiah and Asenoth Everts Howell, was born in Big Flats, New York on February 25, 1835. He attended Alfred Academy in New York State and then entered Amherst College in 1861 with the Class of 1864. On October 9, 1861, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Co. D, 31st Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on November 20, 1862, and became Captain of his company on December 4, 1863. He served at New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Port Hudson, the Teche campaign, the Red River expedition, Sabine Crossroads, Mansfield, Cave Crossing, and Mobile under Generals Butler, Augur, Banks, and Dudley. Howell mustered out at Mobile, Alabama on September 9, 1865, and became a planter in Haynesville, Alabama (1865-1866). He died in Haynesville on October 14, 1866, and was buried in Elmira, New York.
